David Foldvari's illustrations

I love black&white photography and illustration. I like the mix of Foldvari's precise drawing style mixed with ink scratches, drips and blotches. They bring to mind the photographs of Bellocq who scratched out the faces to protect the identites of his subjects. For more of Foldvari's work check out www.davidfoldvari.co.uk

Graffiti Godfather

Described as the Godfather of graffiti art, English coined the term POPaganda to describe his signature mash-up of high and low cultural touchstones, from superhero mythology to icons of art history. English is increasingly known for studio paintings that appropriate popular images: Marilyn Monroe with Mickey Mouse breasts; Barack Obama's face superimposed over that of Abraham Lincoln. Religion and pop, politics and advertising all subverted into nightmarish brightly coloured scenes that unsettle as well as amuse. From guerilla to gallery artist his works are selling for great sums. However he still remains true to his original motivation.
"I just want people to look and question," he says. "I want them, just for a moment, to be critical thinkers, and say to themselves: 'What the hell is that?'"

Robots are watching

'I just have to have it' I screamed! Then bought it. Now I'm wearing it and I love it.

Laurie Lipton Illustrator Artist

A description of Lipton's work from her website:  "Lipton was inspired by the religious paintings of the Flemish School. She tried to teach herself how to paint in the style of the 16th century Dutch Masters and failed. When traveling around Europe as a student, she began developing her very own peculiar drawing technique building up tone with thousands of fine cross-hatching lines like an egg tempera painting. “It’s an insane way to draw”, she says, “but the resulting detail and luminosity is worth the amount of effort. My drawings take longer to create than a painting of equal size and detail... The photographer, Diane Arbus, was one of my inspirations. Her use of black and white hit me at the core of my being. Black and white is the color of ancient photographs and old TV shows… it is the color of ghosts, longing, time passing, memory, and madness. Black and white ached. I realized that it was perfect for the imagery in my work.”

Ilustrator Anna Magnowska

It's illustration overload today and last, but not least, is a girl who has previously collaborated with Laura Quick (see post below) on a set of drawings inspired by customers she served over the years whilst working as a waitress. Each portrait is sketched on a page from a food order pad and some still show people's orders underneath the drawing. Above this is Anna's editorial work. The use of fluorescent pink really gives her work a concise style across the different projects and importantly makes the work eye-catching. See Anna's other projects on her website. www.annamagnowska.com
