Concrete Web by Nicola Yeoman

Frightening and beautiful at the same time. Like a bad dream suspended in the mind.

Nicola Yeoman - "I guess I have grown up as a bit of a magpie, making things, collecting junk, assembling, making dens. I have had an unconventional background as I didn't study art, it’s more something which comes instinctively to me...... Last year I moved into a massive studio, and this has really given me more freedom than ever to mess around and explore different ideas. Some ideas work and I develop them further, and others I abandon. But I have the space to be working on a couple of things at once, and to leave them, keep coming back and changing them, much like the the dens of my youth."

Poulomi Basu

These are the first few images from Basu's project called To Conquer Her Land. The exquisite colour and composition of the first image really drew me in. The colour photos show contemplatative and tender moments in the women's day to day lives within what appears to be a military camp. As the project continues
the photos turn black and white as Basu begins to present the reality of the
military training and practise, suddenly presenting us with a dark and blurred image of the women at night on patrol. The images are also interspersed with quotes from the soldiers, revealing their their fears but also their bravery and toughness.

Robots are watching

'I just have to have it' I screamed! Then bought it. Now I'm wearing it and I love it.

Bag lady

I know its wrong to covet such things but this is what happens when I read fashion magazines. I have gone all goose pimply for the Ellie bag by Bally and the Burberry buckled tote. Beautiful objects but just too expensive for those trying to stay on the right side of the credit line.

Emma Hardy at East Photographic Agency

What a beautiful life when captured like this! Light and dark, brief moments of joy and solitude. I feel like this work is an antidote to editorial work and
is what the camera was invented for.

Want....

Whilst I have zero £££s in the bank, I turn to the internet and virtual shopping. Dreaming one day of owning such beautiful wonders of the fashion world. I hope its not an exaggeration to say that I feel I was born to have these items and that somehow, some way, I will one day be sporting the Bengt wooden earrings with my Westwood jacket and impossibly high R&B boots whilst clutching my designer coffee on the way to work on a winter's morning. Or maybe I've driven to work in my imaginary brand new Fiat 500?

Creative Review Photography

Thomas was selected to have his work in the Creative Review Photography annual this year. Featuring several images from his photo story on female world champion boxer Katie Taylor. Tonight I'm off to the launch party and apparently all the selected works will be on display. Will report back after the event...

....Upadate: Fabulous party at the Print Space on Kingsland Road, grabbed an armful of the annuals to give out to friends. Finished off the night sitting in what felt like a Parisian coffee parlor drinking wine and talking about photography and art but mainly about boxing!

Cardboard horses by Ann Wood

What started as a self-imposed assignment to get the creative juices flowing ended up as an exhibition of 100 cardboard horses in an LA art gallery. Simple but lovely to look at and step by step instructions on Ann's website if the urge takes you to make your own.

Went to see... Sucker Punch

So glad I got to see this brilliant bit of theatre. Daniel Kaluuya and Anthony Welsh as Troy and Leon, rapidly rising up from their beginnings in a south London boxing gym to become champions until the finale showing the two old friends compete against each other. The story is set against the backdrop of the Brixton riots and is really a tale of their attempts to free themselves from their situation, only to end up as pawns in a much larger game - as much a battle with themselves outside the ring, as with each other in it. The use of lighting, slow motion and almost dance like choreography plus the very real feeling that you're in a boxing gym all make this play stand out from the run of the mill theatre productions. And to top it off the sheer physical fitness of the actors just amazed me!
